Reading Reflection No. 2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?

The general idea of the book was a provided list of over 100 tips on how to be successful on social media. It tries to find ways for older generations to connect with the current generation that is growing up with social media.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

It connected with the class because it expands our knowledge base as entrepreneurs. In any sort of business, it is essential that we are able to connect with and relate to our potential customer base. Nowadays, this is done primarily through social media. This book provided a better understanding of how to be successful with social media, therefore enhancing our ability to connect with customers and increasing the likelihood that our business is successful.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

I would design an assignment where we need to create a social media account based on our business idea and the goal is to gain X number of engagements by a certain date. This would be excellent practice with gaining a social media following for when we actually get our businesses off the ground in the future.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

The thing that surprised me the most was how much it focused on content curation over creation. I had always thought of social media as creating your own content and sharing it; this book, however, emphasizes the importance of finding content that other people have created and sharing/engaging with that. It is a much easier and more efficient manner of staying active on social media rather than needing to create new content from scratch consistently.

  1. Hello Grant,

This book sounds interesting, especially since social media is becoming more and more of an advertising method. I didn't know about the difference between curation and creation; it makes sense since there are stock pictures and public domain pictures that you can find online to use for your business. The exercise you recommend sounds very useful, though I am not sure if everyone would care about it if they're not really looking to be an entrepreneur in the future. Great reflection!
